Mindfulness habit formation testimony

I attended CACC 7- week mindfulness course that started in February 2021.

There are 3 stages of habit formation, which are initial stage, learning stage, and stable stage.

The Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care offered the mindfulness course. When I saw the announcement by Chinese Health Initiate, I was pretty curious to learn about mindfulness habits, and luckily, I got into the course.

That was the initial stage. This was a virtual course. It began with a short introductory lecture on mindfulness, what followed was mindfulness meditation.

During the 7-week course, I learned more subjects such as compassion, self-care, mindful communication, and boundaries. The mindfulness course led me into the learning stage. I was very interested to continue learning.

After the course, many students wanted more connections with each other, so we formed a mindfulness support group. This is the stable stage where I begin to practice mindfulness on a regular basis. I try to attend the group whenever I can. Most of us are middle-aged Mandarin speaking women. At the beginning of the meeting, we check in to talk about the experiences in the past two weeks, and to discuss any challenges in life and how we can apply the principle of mindfulness to overcome any obstacles. A member stated that she changes her daily routine by going to bed early and getting up early. She has become more energetic and joyful. Her family members have sensed her change and the peace in the house. Later on, her husband changes his routine to match with hers. The other member stated that she is having a hard time falling asleep and getting up. One member offered meditation tips; another member offered sleep hygiene tips. I love the way they support each other’s needs and exchange information. A member shared her reaction dealing with an instance of fraud in Amazon purchasing. Her instant reaction was to be worried before collecting facts and analyzing data. She took action to try to recover the money she lost from the fraudulent Amazon purchase. It was a waste of her time and energy dealing with a scammer. Her experience taught us to slow down and take some deep breaths, to think it over before acting. I took notes during the meeting. I learned from listening and reflecting. We support each other in becoming more mindful. This is a lifestyle that I desire.

Since I started to regularly practice mindfulness meditation, my relationship with my family has improved, I am more productive at work and I have more energy. I am grateful for the help that The Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care offers to the community.
