CACCC Respite Volunteer Training

California Chinese Hospice Volunteer Training
The CACCC completed the second phase of its Chinese Hospice Volunteer Training at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte on March 31, 2011.

Funded by the California Healthcare Foundation, the pilot program consisted of two 30-hour trainings for Chinese Americans interested in volunteering in hospice and palliative care settings accompanied by two 3-hour trainings for hospice agency staff, one training in Northern California and one in Southern California. Volunteers who completed the training will focus on Mandarin and Cantonese speaking patients and their families, at the 17 partner agencies that participated in the project.

The Northern California part of the project, completed in January, trained 34 volunteers, who are now connecting with hospice agencies to begin serving Chinese patients. Participant evaluations were unanimous in their praise of the quality of the training.

The project was endorsed by the California Hospice and Palliative Care Association. Nursing education contact hours were provided by the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA).
CACCC Translates Fact Sheets
As part of our California Healthcare Foundation grant, the CACCC also translated into Chinese 31 English language Patient/Family Teaching Sheets on end of life issues for the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) to increase understanding of and acceptance of hospice and palliative care. In addition, our grant from the Hospice Foundation of America required the CACCC to adapt to Chinese culture and translate into Chinese four 10-point HFA English fact sheets on hospice, the Advance Directive, and other end of life issues. The World Journal Honors CACCC for its Work in the Chinese Community
At its 35th Anniversary celebration in San Francisco on February 12th last year, the World Journal honored the CACCC for its service to the Chinese community. Along with a certificate honoring that service, the CACCC was presented with a check for $3500.

In 2010, the CACCC's first end-of-life educational column was published weekly in the World Journal, a national Chinese language newspaper with a circulation exceeding 350,000. World Journal journalist and CACCC volunteer Andrew Lan was in charge of this project. We are so thankful that the World Journal agreed to publish the columns and very honored to receive this recognition.

Tsai Chin Concert Helps CACCC

We were honored to have been part of the Tsai Chin Charity Concert again last year, and we want to thank all those dedicated people who worked so hard to make it a success. We especially want to thank Ms. Tsai Chin herself, the CCMF Board of Directors, and Board Director and Event Chair, Kitty Geiger, for her leadership and perseverance. Of course, we also want to thank all the dedicated volunteers who worked for more than a year to make this event possible.

Concert net proceeds were $412,000 of which the CACCC received $41,200 (10%). The concert was held on April 22 and 23 at Flint Center in Cupertino.
